Hidden Woes: Silent Mental Struggles
Mental health challenges are pervasive in slum communities, where factors like poverty, overcrowding, and limited access to healthcare contribute to high rates of stress, anxiety, depression and suicide. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1 in 4 people living in slums suffers from mental health challenges. These issues are exacerbated by the stigma surrounding mental health and seeking help.
We deeply recognize the critical importance of mental health in shaping the overall well-being and development of children. We firmly believe that addressing mental health in slums begins with empowering parents and caregivers to speak out and share their experiences to ensure that the cycle of mental health is broken.

Hakeem’s space
Our Mental health awareness Program
‘Hakeem’s space is an awareness creation social program that targets Primary schools in informal settlements. The program was initiated at the inception of Covid-19 to honour the life of ‘Hakeem’ – a young man that was overcome by mental issues ending up in suicide. This . Through this program, our primary objective is to guide children towards reaching their developmental and emotional milestones, equipping them with healthy social skills, and empowering them with effective coping strategies to navigate life’s challenges. With a steadfast focus on prevention, our program features regular sessions held each day of the week in different schools, covering a wide array of topics dedicated to promoting mental health wellness and counselling
Our program offers interactive and engaging sessions that explore a broad spectrum of mental health topics.
We organize monthly Parents’ Forums that provide parents and caregivers valuable tools and strategies for coping with challenges stemming from limited access to economic, social, and political resources within the household.
The positive impact of our mental health program extends well beyond the confines of the classroom. It has fostered a safe space for girls and women to break the silence surrounding sensitive issues such as molestation, sexual abuse, and physical abuse.
